The best supplements for a ketogenic diet

This is our list of recommendations based on our own research and trial and error. Check overthe videobelow where we review each supplement.

If you want accurate information about the supplements we personally buy, browse ourketogenic supplementsbook page.

1. Magnesium

Magnesium is important on a ketogenic diet, especially early on, as your body goes through an adjustment period in which it retains less water, thereby depleting magnesium. Also add in the fact that a high percentage of the population is inthe risk of developing a magnesium deficiencyand you may have problems. we take400 mg Magnesiumglycinatper day. Because of this, we decided to use magnesium glycinatehigh bioavailability.

Food will always be the best source of vitamins and minerals, so take a look at the table below to see the foods richest in magnesium.

The 10 Best Keto Supplements (And What To Avoid) - KetoConnect (1)

Remember that the "paper value" of vitamins and minerals in a given food does not indicate how much your body will actually absorb. Magnesium is found in animal foods such as salmonmore bioavailablethan the magnesium in pumpkin seeds and almonds.

2. Electrolytes

Magnesium can be included as an electrolyte, but we feel it necessary to emphasize its importance for number 1.

When you're on a ketogenic diet and your muscles are running low on glucose, you retain a lot less water than before. You need to replenish your body's electrolytes like sodium, magnesium, and potassium every day to feel your best.

If you suffer from brain fog, fatigue, muscle spasms or other keto flu symptoms,(learn more about keto flu here)You may not be getting enough electrolytes. You can get electrolytes from food, but you can also take these keto supplements.

  • Salor sodium - just add salt to your food and you should be fine.
  • The sports hallin the Amazon it is high in all three electrolytes. (our favorite)
  • dr. Bergs ElektrolytpulverPretty expensive but a solid product.
  • KetoVitals– A cheaper option for a powdered electrolyte.
  • Magnesiumglycinat– It has a slightly sedative effect, so take it before bed to sleep better.

It's worth noting that many of the magnesium-rich foods are also rich in potassium. Including foods like spinach, avocados, pumpkin seeds, and salmon in your diet can do wonders for your electrolyte levels.

3. Vitamin D3 and K2

Many people are vitamin D deficient, and according to a study byTreatment, Vitamin D deficiency is becoming an epidemic in the United States. If you can get outside during the day to soak up UVA rays, do so, but remember that there are certain places where vitamin D is present during the winter monthsI can'teven done on the skin.

We use brandLong live the natural wayand supplement daily. You can also find vitamin D3 drops in pharmacies and health food stores.

4. Lebertran

It can be difficult to get enough omega-3s and vitamin A, especially if you don't eat a lot of seafood or offal. Cod liver oil can fill both of these potential holes in your diet. Contains large amounts of high-quality omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHAcheckedto reduce inflammation and lower the risk of heart disease. Read our post on essential fatty acids to learn why getting them is so importantOmega 3 in a ketogenic diet.

Cod liver oil also contains adequate amounts of the animal form of vitamin A, which is difficult to obtain from food unless offal is consumed. In fact, cod liver oil wasused as a dietary supplement for centurieswith great effect

5. MCT-Öl

MCT oil is widely recognized as a must-have keto supplement, but it's definitely not a must-have. It's a "nice to have" supplement that can potentially give you more energy, and even some extra energymetabolic benefits. The reason people like to put it in their bulletproof coffee is becauseconverts to energy fasterthan any other fat.

This will increase your ketones, but higher ketones don't mean more fat burning. We prefer to put butter in our coffee as MCT oil has little nutritional value, butMCT-Ölpulvergives coffee and tea creaminess and aroma.

MCT oil is good for a quick boost of energy, but isn't necessary on a keto diet.

  • Perfect Keto MCT Oil
  • Perfect Keto MCT Oil Powder– Try it on ourMug Cake Recipe!
  • Best MCT Oil for Keto

6. MilkProtein Pulver

We prefer to get our protein from real food, but whey protein is a good keto supplement for making baked goods and fat bombs. We occasionally add it to smoothies or coffee for a heartier breakfast. we do ourKeto Protein WafflesjMuffins Makroall the time with serumProtein Pulver.

don't worry too muchWhey protein, which increases insulin levels. As long as you mix it with fat and some fiber, you should be fine. You can always use a glucose meter to see how it affects you.

7.CollagenPeptide

If you have followed oursChannel since YoutubeFor a while you'll know that we don't always recommendCollagenas a keto supplement, but we've changed our minds. After speaking to so many people in the fitness and nutrition community, we learned why and where.Collagencan be beneficial

Nowadays, people mostly eat muscle meat, don'tCollagenrich in connective tissue found inSkin, joints and organs of animals. We like to addCollagento make up for it. We add it to smoothies, coffee and mug cakes. A good dose is 1gCollagenper 10g muscle meat protein.

8. Exogenous Ketones

People sometimes assume that the more ketones you have in your body, the more fat you will burn. That's wrong, weight loss requires a calorie deficit. The only things exogenous ketones provide is energy and electrolytes.

The cost of exogenous ketones does not justify their use due to the small number of benefits they can offer. The best situation to use them is when you are traveling and your diet and hydration are low. Sometimes we even take them for electrolytes after a night of drinking.

Science is yet to prove any claims that they will help you lose weight or adapt to a ketogenic diet faster.

However, if you want to try something for yourself, you should never pay more than $3 to $4 apiece. Some companies charge upwards of $6 per serving. Price is not an indicator of quality in this case as they use all ketones made by thethe same company. We recommendKeto perfect.

9. Fish Oil

The most important thing when choosing a fish oil supplement is that it must be of high quality. The cheap stuff you find at GNC and Walmart will be rusting by the time it gets to you. find onetrusted brandthat is transparent about the sourcing of your fish oil.

Fish oil is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are lacking in our modern diet. In fact, the Americans getmore than 20 timesas many omega-6 fats compared to omega-3 fats. A fish oil or cod liver oil supplement can help balance this out.

10. Multivitamin

The idea that one pill can provide you with all the essential nutrients you need every day is a bit strange, isn't it?

We recommend getting your vitamins from food, but if you still want to take a multivitamin, look for a brand that gets its vitamins from whole food sources. Most multivitamins are made from plant-based vitamins, which have very low absorption rates, or from fully synthetic vitamins.

If you are just adjusting to a healthier diet and you know that you are not eating fully, you may want to aWhole Food Multivitamin. If you eat a diet rich in nutrients and whole foods, then a multivitamin supplement is likely to do more harm than good.

Supplements you (probably) don't need

BCAA or amino acids

BCAAs, or branched-chain amino acids, are a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. People like to take BCAAs before the gym because companies market them as a muscle building supplement.

The truth is that our body already has oneBCAA or amino acid grouponly stored in us through regular protein consumption. Invest your money in more protein than you can eat instead of unnecessary BCAA powders.

(Video) Bad Keto Supplements and Good Keto Bars | Product Review

powder greens

The bioavailability of vitamins from plants is already very low compared to animal products, so we assume that it is significantly lower when the plants are processed into a green powder. Green powders are unnecessary and expensive. Just eat your veggies! Try our two favorite vegetarian side dishes,Brussels sprouts and broccoli.

Keto Supplements You Definitely Don't Need

Don't be fooled by supplements that say "keto" on the label. buzzwords likeeat greatThey're just warning labels for expensive products that you don't need to be healthy or successful on the keto diet.

MCT oil or ketone pills

The maximum a pill can legally have is one gram, meaning you would have to take half a bottle of expensive MCT pills to ingest any significant amount of fat. Don't fall for it! Get your oil in a bottle. Just because they put MCT oil on the label doesn't mean they're good keto supplements.

All diet supplements with "keto" in their name

Based on our own research and experience, we can almost guarantee that a supplement that has "keto" in its name is probably not worth the money. Dietary supplements should not be tied to a specific diet, they should be created with the aim of making the body work better. When a company markets something as keto, they're probably just trying to capitalize on a popular diet with a lackluster product.

Fiber supplements

High-fiber vegetables are great for a ketogenic diet when you want to enjoy a high-volume, low-carb, low-calorie meal. (They're delicious, too.) But you don't need fiber to be successful on the keto diet, so we don't recommend drinking powdered fiber just to hit an unnecessary fiber goal.

fat Burner

If you're considering fat burners, take a step back and see where your mindset is. A sustainable, long-term weight loss plan is all about the diet, not the pills! Think long-term happiness, not short-term happiness.

detoxified

Don't let marketing get to you! Your body is detoxifying and you don't need a powder, tea or juice to get rid of toxins. Detoxification plays on the weaknesses of the human spirit. We love to eat horribly for weeks or months only to make up for it with a 10 day detox. Work on achieving a long-term healthy attitude towards your diet.

Superfoods

Worteat greatIt has become very popular in recent years. Superfoods often come from far away countries, have incredible "healing properties" and are expensive. In our opinion they are not worth your time and money. You can find all the nutrients you need in the grocery store, butcher shop, and fruit and vegetable aisles.

In Summe!

Any keto supplement that sounds too good to be true probably is.

  • There are few supplements that are really needed on a ketogenic diet. Electrolytes, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids make up the short list of essentials.
  • Don't be fooled by the growing number of supplements being marketed for ketogenic diets.
  • Get nutrients from whole foods as much as possible, use supplements as a backup plan.
  • Don't be fooled by cleanses, detoxes, and superfoods. Think long-term and sustainable and you will see long-term success.
