SHOW DESCRIPTIONThe ECM optimizes intake valve timing by using the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system to control the intake camshaft. The VVT system includes the ECM, the oil control valve (OCV) and the VVT controller.
The ECM sends a target duty cycle control signal to the OCV. This control signal regulates the oil pressure applied to the VVT control. The VVT controller can advance or retard the intake camshaft.
If the difference between desired and actual intake valve timing is large and the actual changes in intake valve timing are small, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the VVT controller and sets a DTC.
example:A DTC is set when the following conditions 1), 2) and 3) are met:
- The difference between the desired and actual intake valve timing is more than 5 CA (crank angle) and the condition lasts longer than 4.5 seconds.
- It takes at least 5 seconds to change valve timing to 5 AC.
- After the conditions 1) and 2) above are met, the OCV is forcibly triggered 63 times or more.
DTCs P0011 and P0021 (Advanced Cam Timing) are detected with 1 shot detection logic.
DTCs P0012 and P0022 (Delayed Cam Time) are detected with 2 shot detection logic.
These DTCs indicate that the VVT controller is unable to function properly due to a malfunction in the OCV or the presence of foreign objects in the OCV.
The monitor will only work if the following conditions are met:
- Engine is hot (engine coolant temperature is 75 °C [167 F] or more).
- The vehicle was driven at over 40 mph for 3 minutes.
- The engine was idling for 3 minutes.

TYPICAL LIMITATIONS OF MALFUNCTIONS
P0011, P0021:
P0012, P0022:
If the difference between the desired camshaft timing and the actual camshaft timing is greater than the specified value, the ECM actuates the VVT actuator.
The ECM then monitors the camshaft timing change for 5 seconds.

TEST PROCEDURE
BRIBERY:
- If DTC P0011 or P0012 is displayed, check the VVT system bank 1 circuit.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank containing cylinder #1.
- If DTC P0021 or P0022 is displayed, test the VVT system bank 2 circuit.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include cylinder #1.
- Read the data from the frozen table with the smart tester. The ECM registers vehicle information and driving conditions as freeze frame data at the time a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be useful to determine whether the vehicle was running or stationary, whether the engine was warm or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
1 CHECK ALL OTHER DTCS OUTPUTS (EXCEPT DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 ORP0022)
- Connect the smart tester to DLC3.
- Turn the ignition key ON and turn on the tester.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSTICS / Enhanced OBD II / DTC INFO / UPDATED CODES.
- Read the error codes.
result
BRIBERY:If any DTC other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is reported, repair those DTCs first.
2 PERFORM ACTIVE TEST THROUGH SMART TEST (OPERATE OCV)
- Connect the smart tester to DLC3.
- Start the engine and turn on the tester.
- Warm up the engine.
- Select the following menu items on the tester: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / CTRL VVT B1.
- Check the engine speed while manipulating the oil control valve (OCV) with the tester.
OK
3 CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT CALLS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
- Connect the smart tester to DLC3.
- Turn the ignition key ON and turn on the tester.
- Clear error codes.
- Start the engine and let it warm up.
- Select the verification mode with the tester.
- Driving the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
- Read the error codes with the tester.
OK:No DTC outputs.
THE SYSTEM IS OK
4 CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR SKIP AND RELEASED TEETH IN TIMING CHAIN)
- Remove the left and right cylinder head covers.
- Rotate the crankshaft to align the timing marks on the crankshaft.
- Align the notch on the crankshaft pulley with the “0” position.
- Make sure timing marks on camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap are aligned.
- Rotate the crankshaft 360 clockwise if the timing marks are not aligned. Make sure they line up again.
OK: The timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and camshaft bearing cap are aligned when the notch on the crankshaft sprocket is in the “0” position.
5 CHECK CAMBEAM OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) INSTALLATION
- Remove the camshaft timing (OCV) oil control valve.
- Measure the resistance according to the values in the table below.
Standardwiderstand
- Apply positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check valve function.
OK:Valve moves quickly.
(Video) -Episode 1- Cam/Crank Timing Code P0016 Case Study - What is a P0016? - Reinstall the OCV.
6 CHECK OIL FILTER AND OIL CONTROL VALVE
- Remove the #1 oil tube or oil tube assembly.
- Remove the filter from the oil control valve.
- Make sure the filter and hose are not clogged.
OK: Filter and hose are not clogged.
7 REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY
8 CHECK RESCUE DTC OUTPUT
- Connect the smart tester to DLC3.
- Turn the ignition key ON and turn on the tester.
- Clear error codes.
- Start the engine and let it warm up.
- Select the verification mode with the tester
- Driving the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
- Confirm no error codes were set with the tester.
OK:No DTC output.
BRIBERY: DTC P0011, P0012, P0021, or P0022 is set when foreign objects in the engine oil become trapped in some parts of the system. These codes remain on the output even if the system is running normally again after a short time. These debris are then caught by the oil filter, eliminating the source of the problem.
THE SYSTEM IS OK
